How do I Know if My Snoring is Really Sleep Apnea?

Excessive snoring may indicate obstructive sleep apnea, a condition caused by an obstruction near the base of the tongue.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, your snoring could actually be harming your health. Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?

  • Fatigue and Headaches: Over time, lack of sleep can cause daily disturbances like excessive fatigue and headaches. If you wake up exhausted no matter how long you have slept, you may have sleep apnea.
  • Jaw Pain: Repetitive snoring can often cause jaw pain, and can lead to tooth damage from grinding teeth together during the night or holding the jaw open too widely during snoring spells.
  • Gasping for Air and Snoring: One of the most telltale signs of sleep apnea is gasping for air or sounding as if you’re choking. If you often wake up in the middle of the night feeling out of breath, you may have sleep apnea.

What Makes Sleep Apnea so Dangerous?

Sleep apnea can cause a person to stop breathing – sometimes hundreds of times in just one night. Think about holding your breath for an entire minute. Now consider that you may be doing this over and over, all night long.

Your body and your brain are being deprived of life-giving oxygen over and over again. The hours your body should be rebuilding itself are spent in a constant struggle for breath!
